You may be thinking that taking a personality test is not important to your success in the job interview, but think again. The fact that you have been asked to take the test means your potential employers are seeking certain types of personality.
By gaining insight into what the tests include, why the employers are collecting this information, and how you can present yourself in the best possible manner could be the key to your dream job. Here are 7 actions to boost your chances:
Actions 1: Present yourself with the job position in mind
This is not to say you could fabricate your answers to suit the role, instead tweak a few answers to make yourself more suitable. Try to find out what sort of person the organization are looking for (check the position competencies).
It is very difficult to distort the results of these questionnaires as they are designed to highlight disjointed responses. But it can't hurt to appear higher in conscientiousness, as its a strong predictor of job performance.
Action 2: Go with your gut
if your not sure of the answer, your first thought is likely to be the most accurate. And remember, the test is not interested in 'how your the life of the party' but how you behave in the working environment.
Action 3: Be warned
If you take the assessment from home, then be honest because if you get invited for a face-to-face, your misreporting will be evident. In other words, don't claim to be the perfect extrovert when your clearly an introvert. And on that point, don't see introversion as negative, good employers are seeking to harness the power of introverts.
Action 4: Be decisive
You will always have the option to answer somewhere in the middle, for instance, "Neither Agree nor Disagree" nor "Neutral". It's OK to answer like this if you really have no answer either way, but try to limit how many, because you will appear indecisive. Just think, are they are not looking for people that neither agree nor disagree with everything.
Action 5: Don't be a hardliner
If you realize all your answers are "Strongly Agree" or "Strongly Disagree" then you are going to come across negatively (for instance, over the top, or full of yourself). Having said that, some strong views are important, so just be yourself.
Acton 6: Pay attention
The tests are designed so that some questions are phrased in reverse, so read the questions and the order of the answers carefully. This is a methodological design to ensure the reliability of the participant's answers.
Action 7: Relax!
Remember, you are just answering questions about yourself, and no one knows you better than you. You are much less likely to make a mistake if you are calm.
